Silica Gel SG5 – Clear, beads for reliable drying

Silica Gel SG5 – Clear is a professional desiccant in the form of transparent beads with a diameter of 3–5 mm. It is made of highly active silica gel with a purity of min. 99.5 % SiO₂, giving it a large active surface area (~800 m²/g) and a very high adsorption capacity of up to approx. 36 % of its own weight.

It is suitable for industrial, laboratory, and hobby use – from storing 3D filaments to protecting electronics, optics, and drying smaller humid spaces.

    Main advantages

    • Highly effective silica gel SG5 – transparent beads 3–5 mm
    • Excellent adsorption capacity – up to approx. 36 % weight at high humidity
    • Large active surface area approx. 800 m²/g due to microporous structure
    • Purity min. 99.5 % SiO₂ – chemically inert, odorless, non-conductive
    • Reusable – easy regeneration by heating in an oven or microwave
    • Universal use – filaments, electronics, optics, tools, display cases, cabinets
    • Transparent beads – easy visual inspection of distribution in the container

Use in the field of 3D printing

In 3D printing, many materials (e.g., PA, PETG, TPU, PVA, nylon, composites) are very sensitive to moisture. Absorbed water leads to:

    • bubbles and cracks in the print,
    • impaired layer adhesion,
    • matte, inconsistent surface,
    • for water-soluble materials, even complete degradation.

Silica Gel SG5 – Clear is therefore recommended as part of every drybox or enclosed box for filaments:

    • maintains low relative humidity in the box,
    • increases the lifespan and stability of filaments,
    • helps achieve repeatable, high-quality prints,
    • is also suitable for AMS systems (Automatic Material System) and similar multi-spool feeders.

    Other typical uses

    • storage and transport of electronic components and devices,
    • protection of optics, lenses, binoculars, instruments,
    • drying of smaller humid spaces (cabinets, display cases, boxes),
    • protection of collectibles, tools, photographic equipment,
    • packaging and transport containers where moisture control is necessary.

    1. Placement Pour the required amount of Silica Gel SG5 into a breathable container/bag (e.g., textile bag, perforated bowl) and place it in an airtight container or box with the protected material (filaments, electronics, etc.).
    2. Quantity As a guide, larger enclosed boxes and dryboxes for filaments require hundreds of grams of silica gel. For a precise quantity design, recommendations from the SG5 silica gel manufacturer can be used.
    3. Control Monitor the humidity in the box using a hygrometer. Once the relative humidity starts to rise long-term, it is time to regenerate the silica gel.

    Regeneration and reuse

Silica Gel SG5 can be regenerated (dried) and reused without significant loss of performance.

In an electric or gas oven

    • Recommended temperature: approx. 120–160 °C
    • Procedure:
      • spread the beads in a thin layer on a heat-resistant tray/container,
      • place in a preheated oven,
      • dry until water vapor stops escaping from the silica gel,
      • allow to cool completely and then store immediately in a sealed container so it does not absorb air moisture again.

    In a microwave oven

    • Power: approx. 600–650 W
    • Approximate time: approximately 3 minutes per 100 g of wet silica gel (depending on quantity and layer height)
    • Procedure:
      • use a heat-resistant, non-conductive container (borosilicate glass or ceramic),
      • dry in shorter intervals and check after each cycle if steam is still forming,
      • once steam stops rising, end the process – overheating can damage both the silica gel and the container.

Tip: After regeneration, always let the silica gel cool down and store it in a well-sealed container so it does not absorb moisture from the air before use.
