Silica Gel SO1 – Orange is a high-quality desiccant based on silicon dioxide (SiO₂) designed for reliable moisture reduction in enclosed spaces. Thanks to the color saturation indicator, you can immediately see when it's time for regeneration – the beads change color from orange through yellow-brown to green. It is ideal especially for storing 3D printing filaments, but also for protecting electronics, optics, tools, textiles, or other sensitive items from moisture damage.

Typical use

Storage of filaments for 3D printing Place the silica gel in a closed filament box, dryer, or storage container. It helps maintain relative humidity well below 50%, which is crucial for e.g., nylon, PA-CF, PC, or PVA.
Protection of electronics and optics Drying and protection of cameras, lenses, measuring equipment, PCBs, sensors, and other devices during storage or after moisture exposure (in combination with appropriate drying procedures).
Dehumidification of smaller enclosed spaces Cabinets, showcases, transport packaging, toolboxes, camping equipment, boats/yachts, home and hobby use.

How the moisture indicator works

As soon as the SO1 silica gel beads absorb moisture, they gradually change color:

0 % moisture: orange
approx. 8 % moisture: yellow-brown (at 20 °C, min. 20 % relative humidity)
approx. 20 % moisture: brown-green (at 20 °C, min. 50 % relative humidity)
approx. 30 % moisture: green (at 20 °C, min. 90 % relative humidity)

Once the material is predominantly green, it is time for regeneration.

Instructions for use with 3D filaments

Placement – pour the required amount of SO1 silica gel into a breathable container or bag (textile bag, metal mesh, perforated box) and place it in a closed box with the filaments.
Sealing the space – the better the box is sealed, the faster and more effectively the silica gel will reduce moisture.
Color check – regularly monitor the color of the beads. Once most of them turn green, perform regeneration.
Reuse – after regeneration and cooling, the color returns to orange and the silica gel is ready for the next cycle.

Regeneration and reuse

In an electric or gas oven

Recommended temperature: 110–130 °C (can be up to approx. 160 °C according to the technical data sheet)
Regeneration time: depends on the amount of silica gel and the layer height.

Procedure:

Spread the silica gel in a thin layer on a baking tray or in a heat-resistant container.
Dry at the recommended temperature until steam stops rising from the silica gel.
Let it cool down completely – only then will the color return to orange.

In a microwave oven

Power: approx. 600–650 W
Approximate time: about 3 minutes per 100 g of wet silica gel (i.e. ~10 min per 1 kg; adjust time according to the specific amount).

Procedure:

Use a container resistant to at least 200 °C (heat-resistant glass, ceramics – not metal, not regular plastic).
Dry in shorter intervals, regularly checking if steam is still forming.
If steam no longer rises, do not extend the heating further to prevent overheating of the beads and bursting of the container.
