    Overview

Original Prusa XL – Silicone Printing Toolhead is a forthcoming specialized head that extends the XL’s capabilities with 3D printing of two-component silicone and other fluids. The mixture is prepared in an external mixing unit and delivered to the nozzle via a tube, allowing precise dosing and layering directly onto prints from other toolheads.

Status: The product has been officially introduced as an upcoming tool for the XL; release is planned for 2026.

    Key benefits

    • 3D printing of two-component silicone (RTV) with mixing just before extrusion for high-quality results.
    • Ability to apply silicone directly onto plastic parts printed by other XL heads (overmolding, sealing layers, anti-vibration features).
    • Potential support for other liquids (e.g., epoxy, food materials such as chocolate)—great for prototyping and experiments.
    • Short handling time: the printed silicone can be removed from the sheet after approximately 8 minutes.

    Compatibility and installation

    • Designed exclusively for the Original Prusa XL with toolchanger. The XL supports 1–5 heads and can be gradually expanded using official upgrade kits.
    • Integrating the silicone head requires a semi‑permanent modification of the machine (semi-permanent installation).

    Typical use

    • Seals and industrial gasket parts, damping elements, soft touch surfaces.
    • Functional prototypes from soft materials, direct coating/overmolding of FFF prints.

Note: Detailed specifications (nozzle diameter, speeds, supported mixtures, etc.) will be added after the official manufacturer release. The information above is based on the official presentation of the new tool system for the XL.

    Why on the XL

Original Prusa XL is a large-format CoreXY printer with a toolchanger (up to 5 heads), segmented heatbed, and a perfect first layer across the entire area. Expandability with additional heads is officially supported and makes sense for silicone applications—for example, printing the plastic part and then applying silicone in a single job.

    Key features:

    • 3D printing of two-component silicone (RTV) for functional, flexible parts.
    • Ability to combine with other XL heads and print silicone directly onto plastic prints (overmolding).
    • External mixing with precise dosing; clean and repeatable results.
    • Short time to handle the part (~8 min after printing).
    • Expands the XL’s professional capabilities without an industrial price tag.
    • Expected compatibility with other liquids (epoxy, food applications).
