What it is and who it’s for

The automatic plate changer for Bambu Lab A1 Mini is an alternative, purely mechanical solution for unattended printing of multiple plates in sequence. It uses standard printer movements (Z and Y axes) to eject the finished plate and insert the next one, so you don’t need to add any motors, sensors, or modify firmware. The principle is based on the successful “swap mod” solution for the A1 Mini.

Note: This is not an official Bambu Lab product nor an original SWAP SYSTEMS kit; it is a compatible alternative for more experienced users.

    Main advantages

    • 100% mechanical operation – no electronics and no firmware changes.
    • Allows you to print multiple plates in a row unattended (small-batch production, farms, overnight prints).
    • Assembly from commonly available fasteners (M3 screws/nuts, magnets, PTFE tube).
    • Compatible with original A1 Mini spring steel plates.
    • Open design – option to modify and expand as needed.

    How it works

After a print completes, the printer raises to maximum and performs a defined motion that mechanically ejects the finished plate into the stacker; it then inserts a new plate into position and can proceed with the next job. Behavior is configured by inserting simple moves into the end/start G-code or by editing the project before sending it to Bambu Studio.

    Important information

    • Recommended capacity: up to 10 plates in the stacker (can be adjusted based on configuration and the space in front of the printer).
    • Alternative DIY/“hardware bundle” for A1/A1 Mini is also offered by third parties; these are based on the same mechanical plate-swap principle.
    • Installation and use of the modification may require supervision during initial setup and may affect the printer’s warranty – use at your own risk.

    Tips for successful operation

    • Design/place parts so that the first layer has an adequate contact area (models that are too “stuck” may reduce ejection reliability).
    • In the end G-code, ensure Z lifts to maximum and that move timing is precise.
    • Use quality plates and keep the surface clean for consistent adhesion and release.

    Key features:

    • Automatic multi-plate swapping in sequence for A1 Mini
    • Purely mechanical solution – no electronics or firmware edits
    • Fast assembly from common hardware and printed parts
    • Ability to tune stacker capacity and geometry as needed
    • Suitable for small batches, 24/7 printing, and print farms
    • Compatible with original A1 Mini PEI plates
